England & Wales Christopher Saxton 1579-M-AA-3

An atlas of maps of England & Wales by Christopher Saxton 1543-1611. This is both historically and cartographically as it was the first atlas of English counties. There are very few copies of the original atlas in existence, two of which are in Dublin. The maps are in colour and show towns and roads in the 16th century. The text outside the maps are in latin and is most decorative. The county name is shown in one cartouche. There is a dedication to Queen Elisabeth I on some maps. The scale information is displayed artistically.
