A remarkable 16th century atlas of most impressive maps by Abraham Ortelius 15221598.The colour is brilliant and the maps exhibit significant artistic detail. The state of 16th century knowledge and cartography is very clearly displayed. The cartouche text is in Latin. This is an edition of The Theatrum Orbis Terrarum considered to be the “First True Modern Atlas” published first in 1570. This edition of 1589 expands the original 53 maps to the current 88. There is an attractive frontpiece with much artistic detail and an imposing picture of Ortelius.
